The recent escalation of violence has revealed once again the danger of Hamas. Over 220 Palestinians were killed as the Islamist group in control of the Gaza strip exposed them to direct risk of bombing. The group used Palestinian civilians as human shields in densely populated Gaza. It has establishing tunnels and military barracks under civilian buildings and dwellings where ammunition and explosives are stored.
Hamas's goal is to eliminate the democratic state of Israel by military means and to establish an Islamic theocracy. Hamas, in collaboration with other groups already blacklisted in Europe and the United States such as the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah, is responsible for numerous attacks and controls the Gaza Strip with brutal violence.
Since 1993, the military arm of Hamas has carried out countless kamikaze attacks, attacks with knives and rocket fire, "boasting" that it is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. Israel is also forced by Hamas to take protective measures for its citizens that significantly reduce the quality of life of peaceful Palestinians. Hamas praises acts of violence against Jews and, in the Gaza Strip, also manufactures rockets for other terrorist groups.
Just take a look at Hamas's founding document to understand that its aims are identical to those pursued by the terrorist organization of the Islamic State: "Allah is its fixed point, the Prophet its model, the Koran its law, the jihad his way and death for Allah the highest desire". Hamas also refers to the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", the most influential anti-Semitic theory of the Jewish conspiracy in the world.
Hamas has already been classified as a terrorist organization in Israel and other states, including the Arab and Muslim world. By banning Hamas and similar organizations or by classifying it as a terrorist organization, Switzerland's cooperation with this terrorist movement could be ended.
Europe and the United States must do everything to protect human lives. Showing solidarity with the Palestinians through press releases and media campaigns is no longer enough. To fight terrorism, it is necessary to ban Hamas and close all its financing opportunities.
